Smart meters are being installed everywhere, the programme is already well under way in countries across North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Despite what Big Energy is trying to claim, ‘Smart’ Meters are NOT mandatory and you have the right to refuse them.
The UK government has launched a campaign to install Smart Meters in every UK household by 2020.
How do they work?
Smart meters work like traditional gas and electricity meters by measuring energy use. The difference is that they can automatically send your usage information to your supplier through networks being created by the Data Communications Company (DCC), meaning higher bills for you to pay, along with the potential for corporations to manipulate readings and alter charges in their favour.
They are a privacy risk.
Many appliances and consumer goods coming to market today feature tiny RFID chips which are capable of communicating with a proprietary ‘Smart’ Meter so that the system can discreetly log which appliances, devices and products are used, at what times and for how long.
This means tighter utility readings for big energy corporations at the expense of consumer privacy.
Smart Meters are damaging our health.
Smart Meters operate autonomously or as part of a wireless ‘mesh’ network with neighboring ‘Smart’ Meters and transmit information to the utility companies using biologically-unfriendly bursts of microwave radiation, 24 hours/day.
- Stop Smart Meters UK claim that there is evidence the radiation could be 140 to 800 times higher than that from mobile phones.
- Health risks associated with wireless Smart Meters are designated as Class 2b carcinogens (cancer causing) by the World Health Organisation.
- In the UK, Public ‘Health’ England has stated that no testing of UK ‘Smart’ Meters has been carried out and will only be done, incredibly, “as the technology is rolled out”.
- Intense pulses of microwave radiation (900Mhz) from Smart Meters can be emitted tens of thousands – or even hundreds of thousands – of times a day.
Other health issues that have been connected with smart meters are:
- learning and memory problems
- difficulty sleeping
- anxiety and depression
- skin reaction
- hyperactivity in children
These pulses provide no respite for recovery, and chronic exposure to them can lead to a variety of tangible effects (headaches, sleep problems, palpitations) as well as more serious issues such as calcium ion damage, nitric oxide depletion, melatonin disruption, endothelial cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, blood-brain-barrier leakage, DNA damage and sperm damage (Citation).
Independent studies have revealed that both the strength and frequency of smart meter pulses make them exceptionally threatening. The Center for Electrosmog Prevention, a California nonprofit group, estimates that one smart meter emits the radiation equivalent of about 160 mobile phones. Other studies have concluded that smart meters emit not 100 but 1,000 times the radioactive load of a typical cell phone.
Mechanical engineer Rob Smart, M.S., gives an excellent overview of those EMF spiking waves and the serious health effects in his presentation called “The Dark Side of Smart Meters.”:
The on-off pulse of Smart Meters could be “vastly more damaging to human health” than conventional radiation exposure, according to Rob Smart.
Daniel Hirsch, a radiation expert and instructor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), published a paper refuting the findings of the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), which concluded based on industry data that smart meters are safer than mobile phones. Hirsh countered that:
“… the cumulative whole body exposure from a Smart Meter at 3 feet appears to be approximately two orders of magnitude higher than that of a cell phone, rather than two orders of magnitude lower.”
Think of how much electromagnetic radiation already pollutes our homes; WiFi, cellphones, and other wireless devices already are responsible for long term damage to our health. Smart Meters will only make this worse.
Even the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) agrees that smart meters are a potential threat, especially to people with preexisting health conditions. The group issued a recommendation stating that:
“… no Smart Meters be [in the homes of patients with neurological or neurodegenerative diseases, genetic defects, cancer, and other conditions] and that Smart Meters be removed to a reasonable distance from patients’ homes.”
Smart Meters are not environmentally friendly.
More than 5,000 studies now show that radio frequency EMF radiation is harmful to humans, plants and animals. In particular, radio frequencies induce stress reactions and genetic problems in plants, trees, insects, animals and humans. Problems with navigation and migration have been reported in birds and bees, and bee colony collapse disorder has been reported shortly after ‘Smart’ Meter installation. And the death of trees and plants, and fertility problems and birth defects in livestock have also been reported in regions shortly after ‘Smart’ Meter installation (Council of Europe Report May 2011).
“We are not the only species in jeopardy, practically all animals and plants may be at stake.”
— Dr Olle Johannson, Associate Professor Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute, Sweden
We are being lied to about Smart Meters.
Smart Meter ads draw people in using terms such as ‘upgrade’, ‘transform’, ‘revolutionize’, ‘leading the way’, ‘helping our customers’, ‘enjoy the benefits’, and ‘looking after your world’.
There is no mention of ‘higher bills’, ‘chronic radiation’, ‘privacy loss’, ‘home insecurity’, ‘remote disconnects’, ‘hackers’, ‘behavioral modeling & analysis’, ‘profit’ or ‘institutional shareholders’. And there is no mention of the fact that Ofgem has confirmed that British Gas is misleading customers about ‘Smart’ Meters. http://stopsmartmeters.org.uk/ofgem-confirms-british-gas-is-misleading-customers-on-smart-meters/
Smart Meters are sales and marketing tools, they are invasive data collection devices used to track our utility usage at a time when invasive data collection is already widespread. “Smart” Meters are sales, marketing, demand control & surveillance tools that happen to also do metering.
Here’s a quick recap:
- they overcharge the consumer
- they broadcast your personal info and detailed energy use habits
- they are a fire risk
- they emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs)
Avoid ‘Smart’ Meters at all costs, and spread this message far and wide.
